Brunei side DPMM FC which is competing in the Singapore Premier League, has officially announced the signing of Latvian forward Dāvis Ikaunieks.
Last season, the 30-year-old Dāvis played for FA Šiauliai in the Lithuanian A Lyga, where he emerged as the second-best scorer in the league, netting 18 goals. This season, Šiauliai will be managed by former Latvian National Team manager Dainis Kazakevičs, who will be without one of the team’s key players from the previous season for the upcoming 2025 campaign.
Brunei DPMM FC announced that Dāvis will arrive in the small Asian country on January 4th. His debut match is expected nine days later when the Singapore Premier League resumes following the winter break. DPMM will host the Lion City Sailors in that match. DPMM is in 6th place in the league table with 21 points from 18 games.
The team is coached by Scotsman Jamie McAllister, who briefly served as caretaker coach for the Brunei National Team in 2024. Not far away in Cambodia, another group of Latvians is making a living in football, including manager Jurģis Kalns, coach Renārs Rode, and defender Vitālijs Jagodinskis, all of whom are with Cambodian Premier League side Visakha FC.
Ikaunieks began his career with Liepājas Metalurgs, while later on played with FK Liepāja and FC RFS in Latvia. In 2015, he won the Latvian Virslīga title with FK Liepāja. He has spent much of his career playing abroad, particularly in the Czechia, where he achieved significant success with Jihlava. In 2018, he was named the best foreign player in the Czechia top league and received the Latvian Footballer of the Year title. Dāvis Ikaunieks has accumulated 48 caps for the Latvian National Team.
