FS Jelgava, who was relegated from Virslīga this season, announced today that the former Latvian U21 National team manager, Aleksandrs Basovs, will be their new head coach.

The 47-year-old specialist took over as head coach of the Latvian U19 team in 2016, a position he held for three years. During his tenure, he led the Latvian youth national team to the Elite Round of the competition for the first time in their history in 2018.

Basovs also served as the manager of the Latvian U17 team before taking over as the U21 National team manager in 2020, succeeding Dainis Kazakevičs. Under Basovs’ leadership, the U21 team enjoyed its most successful qualifying campaign for the UEFA European Championship in the last decade, finishing fifth in their group. Notable achievements included a victory over Turkey and draws against the Irish and Italian U21 national teams.

After five years as the U21 National team manager, Basovs left the position last month. During his time there, he also won the Baltic Cup twice.

Last season, FS Jelgava was last in the Virslīga with 25 points in 36 games. Valērijs Redjko started the season as a manager, but midway through the season, he was demoted, and the Ukrainian specialist Anatoliy Sydenko took over the team. Now, Basovs will look to get them back in Virslīga as they will play in the Nākotne League next season.
