Riga FC has officially announced the signing of Latvian national team defender Maksims Toņiševs on a free transfer. The 24-year-old right-back, a Riga native, returns to his hometown to strengthen Riga FC’s squad ahead of the new season.

Toņiševs, a product of Rigas Futbola Skola, began his professional career with RFS in 2019 before spending time on loan at BFC Daugavpils, where he made 43 appearances, scored one goal, and provided three assists. In 2021, he joined Valmiera FC, where he played a pivotal role over four seasons, winning the Latvian Virslīga title once and appearing in 124 matches across all competitions. During his time at Valmiera, he tallied three goals and eight assists.

Toņiševs has also represented Latvia at every youth level and has earned three caps with the senior national team.

Commenting on his move, Toņiševs expressed his excitement and acknowledged the challenge ahead:

“Playing for Riga FC is a step up in my career. The competition here is intense, and I’ll need to prove myself. Matches against Riga FC were always tough because of the high-quality players in the team. Now, I’m excited to be part of this setup and aim to contribute to the club’s success in the coming seasons.”
