Estonia claimed their first victory of the new UEFA Nations League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Luxembourg at the A. Le Coq Arena, with Rasmus Peetson’s fifth-minute strike proving enough to secure all three points for Jürgen Henn’s side.

Henn made several notable choices to his starting XI, with Matvei Igonen replacing Karl Jakob Hein in goal after the latter was troubled by a muscle problem. Mattias Männilaan was handed the responsibility of leading the attack, while Peetson, Kevor Palumets, Markus Poom, Patrik Kristal and Mattias Käit formed an energetic midfield unit. Luxembourg, meanwhile, surprisingly left Benfica midfielder Leandro Barreiro on the bench.

Estonia could hardly have asked for a better start. After producing a promising attack almost immediately from kick-off, the hosts took the lead in the fifth minute. Käit drove into the penalty area, beat his defender and aimed a low effort towards the bottom corner. Luxembourg goalkeeper Anthony Moris made the initial save, but Peetson reacted quickest to the rebound and fired the ball in off the crossbar to make it 1-0.

The hosts almost doubled their advantage five minutes later. Maksim Paskotši found himself in an unusually advanced position and was presented with an excellent opportunity inside the area, but Moris was equal to his effort.

Estonia’s intensity without the ball caused Luxembourg plenty of problems during the opening stages, with Henn’s side aggressively cutting out passes and looking to attack quickly after regaining possession. The visitors gradually recovered from the shock of conceding so early, however, and began seeing more of the ball as the first half progressed.

One of Luxembourg’s better opportunities arrived midway through the half when Aiman Dardari found space inside the area, only for Paskotši to position himself well and block the resulting effort. Shortly afterwards, Omar Natami met a cross and sent the ball into the side-netting, providing Estonia with another warning.

Despite Luxembourg taking greater control of possession towards the end of the half, Estonia’s defensive structure remained solid. Captain Karol Mets closely tracked Vincent Thill, while Paskotši and Märten Kuusk dealt effectively with much of what reached the penalty area. Igonen had relatively little to do as Estonia headed into the break with their 1-0 advantage intact.

Neither manager made a change at half-time, but the second period developed into a much more uncomfortable affair for Estonia. Luxembourg increasingly controlled possession and pushed the hosts deeper, although clear chances remained difficult to create.

Mathias Olesen’s side threatened from distance when Moreira fired narrowly wide from around 20 metres, while Estonia struggled for a period to keep possession and turn defensive recoveries into sustained attacks.

Henn responded by introducing Karel Mustmaa for Männilaan in the 66th minute, and Estonia soon came agonisingly close to finally giving themselves some breathing room.

Poom delivered a corner towards Peetson, who rose to direct a header towards the far corner. It appeared destined for the net, but Moris produced an excellent reaction save, getting his fingertips to the ball and keeping Luxembourg within one goal.

Kristal was also increasingly influential as Estonia looked to regain control. The young midfielder was heavily involved in transition and later saw a long-range effort take a slight deflection and go behind for a corner.

Markus Soomets replaced Palumets in the 72nd minute as Henn looked to strengthen his midfield, while Luxembourg responded with several attacking changes of their own. Mustmaa then tested Moris after getting into the penalty area, but the Luxembourg goalkeeper again denied Estonia a second goal.

The closing stages became increasingly tense in front of 7,211 spectators at the A. Le Coq Arena. Luxembourg continued to send balls into Estonia’s penalty area, but the hosts defended with determination. Paskotši made a crucial intervention to cut out a dangerous pass intended for a Luxembourg attacker, while Soomets twice cleared dangerous deliveries from set pieces.

Mihkel Ainsalu was introduced for Käit with ten minutes remaining, while Mets picked up a yellow card shortly afterwards after losing possession and stopping the resulting Luxembourg attack.

Estonia were forced to withstand one final spell of pressure in the closing minutes. Kuusk and Paskotši both required attention following a defensive challenge, but were able to continue, while Igonen produced an important late save from a long-range Luxembourg effort.

Three minutes of stoppage time were added, but Estonia held firm to secure a clean sheet and, more importantly, their first victory of the Nations League campaign.

The 1-0 result continued Estonia’s positive start to the international window following their 1-1 draw away against Iceland, taking Henn’s side to four points from their opening matches. They will finish this long international break on Tuesday when they will host group leaders Iceland, who beat Bulgaria today.
