Four flags intended for Estonia’s supporters’ section at A. Le Coq Arena were rejected by a UEFA delegate, including the national flag of Angola. Supporters’ group Jalgpallihaigla had planned to put the flags up before the match for approval.
Two of the rejected flags had appeared at previous Estonia matches. One, featuring a ring-cross motif, had been displayed for more than a decade before UEFA banned it two years ago, ruling it racist or discriminatory. The football association was fined €10,000, and the supporters’ section was ordered to close for one match if the situation recurred.
The other previously used flag carried the message “UEFA mafia, stop killing international football”. It was displayed during Estonia’s Baltic Cup match against the Faroe Islands in Pärnu over the summer, positioned outside the stadium perimeter. The supporters had put it up in protest at changes to the international qualifying format, which they believed would further separate stronger and weaker national teams.
