Defending Toplyga champions Kauno Žalgiris returned to the top of the table after securing a 2-0 away victory over FA Šiauliai. Second-half goals from Motiejus Burba and Franco Baldassarra earned the visitors all three points, allowing them to move back into first place after Sūduva dropped points earlier in the day.
Kauno Žalgiris took control from the opening minutes and created several dangerous attacks, but the hosts survived the early pressure with goalkeeper Vilius Šivickas playing an important role. The visitors also won a number of corners without finding the breakthrough.
Šiauliai created their best opportunity of the first half when Dino Hasanovic released Divine Naah through on goal. The Ghanaian had the chance to score against his former club but failed to beat Tomas Švedkauskas, leaving the match goalless at the interval.
Kauno Žalgiris finally made their dominance count in the 53rd minute. Following a short corner routine, Anthony Kalik found Burba, who finished first time to give the defending champions a 1-0 lead.
Šivickas kept the hosts in contention as Kauno continued to threaten. The Šiauliai goalkeeper produced an excellent save to deny Leon Krekovic before also keeping out an effort from Renan Oliveira as the visitors searched for a second goal.
The result remained in the balance until first-half stoppage time, when two substitutes combined to secure the victory. Gratas Sirgėdas delivered the ball into the area and Baldassarra finished from close range to make it 2-0.
The victory takes Kauno Žalgiris to 51 points and sends them back to the top of the Toplyga standings after Sūduva were held to a 1-1 draw by Hegelmann earlier on Sunday. Šiauliai remain on 17 points and are now guaranteed to finish ninth, meaning they will have to contest the relegation play-offs.
