Latvia international Andrejs Cigaņiks produced one of the best performances of his career on Saturday, scoring twice in the space of two minutes as Luzern played out a 3-3 draw away against Young Boys in the Swiss Super League.
The 29-year-old left-back had already opened his account for the season last week against Servette and once again started for a Luzern side that arrived in Bern unbeaten in their previous four matches.
The visitors made a poor start, however, falling behind in the 14th minute. Young Boys carried that 1-0 advantage into half-time, but Cigaņiks completely changed the game immediately after the restart.
In the 47th minute, the Latvian international received the ball around 20 metres from goal and fired a low effort into the bottom corner to make it 1-1. Just two minutes later, he struck again, this time arriving in the right place to head home from close range and give Luzern a 2-1 lead.
It was the first time Cigaņiks had scored at least twice in a competitive match since May 2018, when he netted a brace for Schalke’s reserve team in the German Regionalliga.
Luzern’s advantage did not last long, with Young Boys quickly finding an equaliser. The visitors went back in front in the 65th minute when Matteo Di Giusto converted from the penalty spot, but once again they were unable to protect their lead.
Young Boys found another equaliser in the 88th minute to make it 3-3, and that proved to be the final goal of an entertaining encounter.
Cigaņiks completed the full 90 minutes and has now scored three goals in his opening seven league appearances of the season. It is already his best scoring return in a top-flight campaign since the 2023/24 season with Widzew Lodz, when he also scored three times in the Polish Ekstraklasa.
Despite twice letting a lead slip, Luzern extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to five matches. They sit fifth with nine points from seven games and will next host another Swiss heavyweight, Basel, on Sunday.
