Kauno Žalgiris said goodbye to UEFA Europa League qualifying with pride after beating Turkish giants Besiktas 1-0 at home, even though the Lithuanian champions were eliminated 1-3 on aggregate. After the match, head coach Željko Sopic could not hide his pride in his players and admitted he was still struggling to believe that his side had defeated one of Turkey’s biggest clubs.
“I think we gave the fans a great game tonight,” said Sopic. “I understand that Besiktas did not play with their strongest starting line-up, but neither did we. In the end, I am very proud of my team. I believe not only our fans, but the whole country can be proud of how we fought.”
The Croatian coach emphasized that while Besiktas deserved to progress over the two legs, Kauno Žalgiris had shown their quality on the night.
“Sometimes there are days when you play better, sometimes worse, but the most important thing is to understand that we beat Besiktas. Honestly, I still cannot believe it. Of course, it is normal that Besiktas are a more solid team and deserved to go through, but today we were better.”
Besiktas advanced to the UEFA Europa League league phase, while Kauno Žalgiris will continue their European campaign in the UEFA Conference League league phase – the first time in the club’s history they will play in the main stage of a UEFA competition.
Looking ahead, Sopic said his players must enjoy the moment, but also understand the level that awaits them.
“We have a lot of confidence, but we must understand that it will not be easy because we will be in the last pot and will face two or three teams at a similar level to Besiktas. It will not be easy for us. But as I told my boys, we have to enjoy it.”
Kauno Žalgiris will play six matches in the Conference League league phase, three at home and three away. The draw will take place today.
The club’s European run has already secured a significant financial reward, with Kauno Žalgiris guaranteed around 4 million Euros in UEFA payments.
