Latvian champions Riga FC stand just one victory away from making history on Thursday evening as they host Faroese champions KI Klaksvik at Skonto Stadium in the decisive second leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off. After last week’s goalless draw in the Faroe Islands, Adrian Gul’a’s side have another opportunity to become only the third Latvian club to reach the league phase of a major UEFA competition. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 local time, with more than €2 million in prize money and a place in a Conference League.
The first leg ended 0-0 in Klaksvik, where Riga FC became the latest team unable to end the Faroese champions’ impressive five-year unbeaten home run in European qualifiers at their compact artificial-pitch stadium. Nevertheless, Gul’a’s side returned to Riga satisfied with the result, knowing the decisive match would be played on the natural grass of Skonto Stadium in front of what is expected to be a near-capacity crowd.
Riga FC began their European campaign in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, where they were eliminated by Armenian champions Ararat-Armenia. Since dropping into the UEFA Conference League, they have produced two impressive ties, defeating North Macedonian side Vardar 8-4 on aggregate before overcoming Hungarian champions Gyor 2-1 to reach the play-offs.
KI Klaksvik’s journey started with victory over Luxembourg champions Bissen before narrowly losing 0-1 on aggregate to Lithuanian champions Kauno Žalgiris in the Champions League second qualifying round. They then dropped into the Europa League qualifiers, where they suffered a heavy 0-6 aggregate defeat against Polish champions Lech Poznan.
Riga FC have already secured just under €2 million in UEFA prize money during this European campaign, but Thursday’s match is worth considerably more than the financial reward alone. Victory would not only guarantee another multimillion-euro payday but would also erase years of painful memories in European play-off ties.
This is the fourth time Riga FC have reached the final qualifying hurdle before a major UEFA league phase, but each previous attempt ended in heartbreak. In the 2019/20 Europa League play-offs they narrowly lost 2-3 on aggregate to Copenhagen. Two years later came arguably the darkest night in the club’s European history, as they were eliminated by Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps 2-4 on aggregate after extra time in the UEFA Conference League play-offs. Last season, Riga FC pushed Czech giants Sparta Prague all the way before falling 1-2 on aggregate.
Everything is now on the line once again. A victory on Thursday evening would see Riga FC become one of the 36 clubs competing in the UEFA Conference League league phase and write another chapter in Latvian football history. With a sold-out atmosphere expected at Skonto Stadium, all the ingredients are in place for one of the biggest nights the club has ever experienced.
