This weekend more than 90 youth teams and thousands of young footballers, coaches and families descended on Liepāja, as the 2026 Dobrecova Cup once again transformed the city into one of the Baltic region’s busiest football destinations.
Now in its 16th edition, the international youth tournament has grown into one of Latvia’s leading grassroots football events. While the competition provides valuable development opportunities for young players, it has also become an increasingly important contributor to sports tourism, attracting visitors from across the Baltics and beyond.
Along with this, team sports in an era of smartscreens child addictions, a push for a healthier sporting nation, and the development of a better youth footballing system have never been so important.
A Summer of Football
Running across multiple weekends between June and August, the Dobrecova Cup welcomed teams from U7 through to U14 level, alongside dedicated girls’ competitions including WU10, WU12 and WU14.
The opening weekend (5–7 June) featured the youngest age groups, while later stages brought together some of the strongest youth academies from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Denmark.
Among the tournament’s highlights:
- 48 teams competed in the U10 age group alone.
- More than 216 matches were played in that single category.
- Clubs travelled from across the Baltic states as well as Poland and Denmark.
- Matches were staged across Liepāja’s principal football venues, including Olimpija Stadium, Daugava Reserve Ground and Raiņa Parks Stadium.
Managing hundreds of fixtures across multiple venues is a significant organisational challenge, underlining why the Dobrecova Cup has established itself as one of Latvia’s flagship youth football tournaments.
A Boost for Sports Tourism
The tournament’s impact extends well beyond the football pitch.
Each tournament weekend brings hundreds of visiting players, coaches and supporters into Liepāja, creating strong demand for accommodation, restaurants, cafés and local attractions.
With only a small number of participating teams based in Liepāja, most visitors travel from elsewhere in Latvia or overseas, generating valuable tourism revenue during the summer months.
Based on participation figures, a typical tournament weekend is estimated to generate:
- Thousands of overnight stays in local hotels and guesthouses.
- Increased spending in restaurants, cafés and retail businesses.
- Additional visits to the city’s beaches, cultural attractions and leisure facilities.
Using conservative tourism spending assumptions, the tournament is estimated to contribute several hundred thousand euros to the local economy during a single weekend. Across the summer programme, the overall economic impact is likely to exceed €1.5 million, illustrating the growing value of sports tourism for the city.
Municipal support for events such as the Dobrecova Cup therefore represents more than an investment in youth football. It also supports local businesses, strengthens the visitor economy and raises Liepāja’s profile as a sporting destination.
Digital Innovation
Alongside the on-field action, the tournament continued to expand its digital offering.
Supporters who were unable to travel to Liepāja were able to watch matches through a paid streaming service, allowing families to follow games remotely while creating an additional commercial revenue stream for the organisers.
Pricing was straightforward. Individual matches were available for €2.99, while supporters could purchase a full age-group pass for €7.99, providing access to every match within that category on the streaming platform.
The initiative demonstrated how youth tournaments can diversify their income while giving young players the experience of competing in professionally produced broadcasts.
Champions Crowned
Competition throughout the tournament remained fiercely contested, with several finals decided by narrow margins.
U11 (2015): Lithuanian side FA Šiauliai lifted the title after defeating Mārupes NSS 2-1 in the final.
U10 (2016): Vilnius FA claimed the championship with a 1-0 victory over Klaipēda FM.
U13/U14: Earlier in the summer, Riga FC Academy defeated JDFS Alberts after a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
More Than a Football Tournament
The Dobrecova Cup continues to demonstrate the wider value of youth sport.
For players, it provides meaningful international competition and valuable development opportunities. For clubs, it offers high-quality opposition and professional tournament organisation. For Liepāja, it delivers thousands of visitors, significant tourism revenue and growing international exposure.
As sports tourism becomes an increasingly important sector across Europe, the Dobrecova Cup provides a strong example of how investment in grassroots football can deliver benefits that extend well beyond the final whistle.
