Estonia international Michael Schjønning-Larsen scored his first goal of the new Scottish Premiership season, but it proved only a consolation as Kilmarnock suffered a heavy 1-5 home defeat to reigning champions Celtic.
The 25-year-old left-back retained his place in the starting line-up after a difficult opening weekend, when he unfortunately scored an own goal in Kilmarnock’s dramatic 3-4 defeat to St Johnstone.
The hosts endured another nightmare start against the Scottish champions. Celtic took complete control in the first half, with record signing Kasper Høgh scoring a hat-trick to give the visitors a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished early in the second half as Celtic added a fourth goal.
Kilmarnock finally found a response in the 56th minute through Schjønning-Larsen. Receiving the ball on the left flank, the Estonian cut inside onto his right foot before curling an excellent strike into the far corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and scoring Kilmarnock’s only goal of the afternoon.
It was Schjønning-Larsen’s third Scottish Premiership goal in 20 league appearances for the club.
Celtic restored their four-goal advantage later in the second half by adding a fifth goal to complete an emphatic 5-1 victory.
Schjønning-Larsen played 74 minutes before being substituted.
Following back-to-back defeats to open the league campaign, Kilmarnock are currently the only Scottish Premiership side yet to collect a point this season. Their attention now turns to the Scottish League Cup, where they host Ayr United on Friday, before returning to league action on 22 August with an away trip to Hibernian.
