Latvian youth international Nils Veinbergs has earned a move to the Finnish top flight after an impressive first half of the season, joining Veikkausliiga side TPS on loan until the end of the campaign.

The 18-year-old striker, who is contracted to fellow Veikkausliiga club Ilves, spent the opening part of the season on loan at Ekenas IF in Finland’s second tier. Veinbergs scored five goals in 12 league appearances, leaving him joint second in the Ykkosliiga scoring charts.

Ilves have now confirmed that the Latvian forward will spend the remainder of the season on loan at TPS. After 13 league matches, the Turku-based club sit seventh in the 12-team Veikkausliiga with 19 points, while Ilves are one place lower with three points fewer.

“I’m delighted to be in Turku,” Veinbergs said after completing the move. “I believe I can bring plenty of aerial strength and physical presence to the team. I want to play as much as possible and score goals.”

TPS sporting director Kasper Hämäläinen believes the striker is exactly the type of player the club has been looking for.

“We have been looking for more power in attack, and Nils is already a familiar player to me. We played against Ekenas IF in the Finnish Cup, which also gave us the chance to assess his development. He is a tall, physical striker who can hold up the ball, is technically very good for his size and, above all, is hungry for goals. He will also give us another threat from set pieces, and I believe he fits our team perfectly,” Hämäläinen said.

Veinbergs represents Latvia at Under-19 level, scoring four goals in 13 international appearances.
