South Korean media report that ten-time K League 1 champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are set to strengthen their attacking options by signing Lithuanian international Gytis Paulauskas on loan from fellow top-flight club Jeju SK.

The 26-year-old striker moved to South Korea at the start of the year after leaving Slovak side Michalovce and has made seven league appearances for Jeju this season, registering one assist. According to reports in South Korea, Paulauskas will now continue his career with Jeonbuk, who currently sit third in the K League 1 standings after 15 rounds, six points behind leaders FC Seoul.

Jeonbuk have been forced into the transfer market after suffering a number of injury problems in attack. The club’s leading scorer, Brazilian forward Tiago Orobo, is currently sidelined with a fractured jaw, while Italian striker Andrea Compagno has yet to feature this season after missing the entire campaign through injury. Compagno enjoyed an impressive debut season in South Korea last year, scoring 16 goals in 31 league appearances.

That has left Brazilian forward Bruno Mota as the club’s only recognised attacking option. Despite scoring 10 or more goals in each of the previous three seasons across K League 2 and K League 1, the 29-year-old has managed just two goals in 15 league matches this year.

Paulauskas has earned 29 caps for the Lithuanian national team and began his professional career with FK Riteriai. During his career he has also represented Egnatia in Albania, Kolos Kovalivka in Ukraine, Dinamo Batumi in Georgia and Michalovce in Slovakia before making the move to South Korea earlier this year.

The K League 1 has been on its mid-season break since 17 May because of the FIFA Club World Cup and is scheduled to resume on 4 July.
