Latvian champions Riga FC have announced Greek goalkeeper Athanasios Papadoudis as the club’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper arrives from Cypriot champions Pafos FC and adds further competition to Riga FC’s goalkeeping department ahead of a busy second half of the season.

Standing at 194 centimetres tall, Papadoudis is a product of the renowned Olympiacos academy. Although he never made a senior appearance for the Greek giants, he was part of the club’s squad during their historic 2023/24 UEFA Conference League triumph. The goalkeeper was included in the matchday squad for all nine knockout-stage fixtures, including the final, as Olympiacos stunned Fiorentina 1-0 to lift the trophy.

In the summer of 2024, Papadoudis moved to Cypriot side Pafos FC. During his two seasons with the club, he made six first-team appearances and was also part of the squad that won the Cypriot Cup earlier this year.

Now the young goalkeeper joins Riga FC, where he will compete for playing time with Latvian internationals Krišjānis Zviedris and Frenks Dāvids Orols. Zviedris started the season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, while Orols has established himself as the preferred option in recent weeks and made his debut for the Latvian national team during the Baltic Cup earlier this month.

Papadoudis arrives at a Riga FC side currently leading the Tonybet Virslīga and preparing for both domestic and European challenges during the second half of the campaign.

Riga FC return to action on Thursday when they travel to face BFC Daugavpils in Tonybet Virslīga action.
