Former Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan will once again pull on the famous red shirt when Liverpool Legends face Barcelona Legends in Seoul, South Korea, on 6 June.

The 40-year-old former Estonia captain spent two seasons at Liverpool between 2016 and 2018, making 53 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals. Despite his relatively short spell at Anfield, Klavan has remained a regular participant in the club’s legends matches since retiring from top-level football.

Speaking to Estonian outlet Soccernet.ee, Klavan admitted he had lost count of how many times he has represented Liverpool Legends. “Maybe three or four games. I can’t say for sure,” he said.

Asked why Liverpool continue to invite him back, Klavan joked that age may be working in his favour. “My time at the club wasn’t long, but it must have been memorable or useful for some reason,” he said. “If we’re talking about a pensioners’ match, then in that world I’m still young and I can cover more ground.”

Klavan added that he was more than happy to take on such a role given the calibre of players expected to represent Barcelona. “If you get to play against Puyol, Iniesta, Rivaldo, Kluivert, Busquets, Alba and Deco, then it’s not a bad way to be used,” he told Soccernet.

Liverpool’s squad for the exhibition match is expected to include a number of former stars, among them Jerzy Dudek, Martin Škrtel, Sami Hyypiä, John Arne Riise, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel.

While now serving as president of JK Tallinna Kalev, Klavan has not completely stepped away from playing. This season he has made three competitive appearances within the Kalev system, featuring twice for Kalev U21 in Esiliiga B and once for Kalev III.
