FK Liepāja have officially announced the appointment of Estonian specialist Vladimir Vassiljev as the club’s new head coach.

The 38-year-old arrives in Latvia after most recently working with Paide Linnameeskond in the Estonian Premium Liiga. Vassiljev spent just over a year in charge of the club before his departure at the end of April, bringing to an end a spell that had begun ahead of the 2025 season.

Vassiljev is best known for his successful period with FCI Levadia. During his time in Tallinn, he guided the club to the Estonian championship title in 2021 and followed that achievement by winning the Estonian Cup in 2022.

Before taking charge of Levadia’s first team, Vassiljev gained experience in several different coaching roles. He worked with Nõmme United, spent time abroad with Slovak side STK Šamorin and was also part of the Estonian national team coaching staff as an assistant under Karel Voolaid.

His appointment comes shortly after Liepāja parted ways with Swedish coach Andreas Alm. The Swede guided the club to a third-place finish in the Virslīga last season, but a difficult start to the 2026 campaign ultimately led to a change on the bench.

Vassiljev’s arrival had been anticipated for several days. The Estonian coach had already travelled to Liepāja and was present at the club’s recent away fixture against FS Jelgava and home game against FK Tukums 2000 while negotiations were being finalised.

Vassiljev will have more than a week to work with his new squad during the international break before taking charge of his first match. His debut on the Liepāja bench is expected to come on June 12, when the club hosts SK Super Nova in Tonybet Virslīga action.
