Latvia Under-21 head coach Jakubs Dovalils has included Sweden-based winger Alberts Aleksanjans in his squad for next month’s Baltic Cup, handing the 20-year-old his first call-up.
Aleksanjans was born in Latvia to an Armenian father and Latvian mother, before moving to Norway aged three. He is eligible to represent Latvia, Armenia or Norway.
After spending last season in Norway’s third tier with Ull/Kisa, where he recorded 10 goals and four assists in 23 matches, the 2006-born wide midfielder joined IFK Norrköping in February. The club were relegated from Sweden’s top flight last year and are now playing in the second division.
Aleksanjans has made an immediate impact, featuring regularly in the Swedish Cup group stage and scoring on his league debut. Norrköping have 14 points from nine matches and sit fifth in the 16-team table.
Speaking when he signed, the 193cm attacking midfielder highlighted his strengths as: “Dribbling, pace and scoring goals.”
Latvia U21 begin their Baltic Cup campaign against Estonia on 5 June at LNK Sporta parks. Estonia then play Lithuania on 7 June in Daugavgrīva, before Latvia face Lithuania in Tauragė on 9 June.
