Pijus Širvys has announced through his social media channels that he is leaving NK Maribor after two and a half years at the club, becoming a free agent ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 28-year-old Lithuanian national team full-back joined Maribor in January 2024 from FK Panevėžys and quickly established himself as a regular starter in Slovenia. Last season Širvys made 22 league appearances, scoring once, while across his entire spell with Maribor he played 80 matches, recording four goals and seven assists.
During his time in Slovenia, Širvys twice finished as Slovenian vice-champion with Maribor.
In an emotional farewell posted on Instagram, the Lithuanian defender thanked the club and supporters:
“I spent the best years of my life at this amazing club. My family and I fell in love with the city and the people from day one. I had the chance to experience the culture and beauty of this wonderful country, and I met friends who will stay with me for the rest of my life.
With tears in my eyes, it’s time to say goodbye.”
Širvys, who has earned 30 caps for the Lithuania national football team and scored four international goals, now enters the market as a free agent.
According to Azerbaijani media reports, one of the clubs interested in signing the Lithuanian defender is Qarabag FK, the most decorated club in Azerbaijani football. Qarabag reached the UEFA Champions League knockout stage this season before being eliminated by Newcastle United F.C..
The Azerbaijani side finished second in the domestic league this season, behind Sabah FC, coached by Lithuanian manager Valdas Dambrauskas.
