Saku Sporting won the Estonian Women’s Cup on Saturday as they came from behind to beat Paide Linnanaiskond 4-1 at Pärnu Rannastaadion.
Paide struck early when captain Renate-Ly Mehevets put them in front after three minutes, but Sporting responded through Emma Treiberg. Treiberg levelled in the 18th minute and then completed her brace on 33rd minute to turn the final around, sending Saku in 2-1 up at half time.
Saku pulled clear early in the second half as Katriin Saulus made it 3-1 50 minutes in and captain Grete Daut added a late fourth to seal the trophy.
After the match, Emma Treiberg said the result exceeded her expectations. “The final score was surprising. I didn’t think we could beat Paide 4-1,” Treiberg told Soccernet.ee, pointing to fine margins in key moments. “The charm and pain of women’s football is how someone gets going, and who can clear the ball successfully or take their chances at the right time.”
Treiberg added that Paide’s quick opener helped sharpen her focus. “It was my player who scored. I had to mark her,” she said. “I don’t know… if my player hadn’t scored, would I have scored twice? After their goal I felt sporting anger.”
Saku Sporting head coach Merily Toom said detailed preparation and a clear match plan helped deliver the club’s second women’s cup triumph, pointing to lessons drawn from the sides’ two most recent meetings. She said Sporting had reviewed those matches in depth and used the findings to shape how they managed space and moments in the game.
“I think today the win came from good preparation and a solid plan,” Toom said. “We knew what we wanted to do on the pitch. And the desire too – the players had the spirit to go right to the end.”
Toom added that Sporting’s analysis informed specific tactical decisions. “We analysed the last and the previous head-to-head,” she noted. “We made conclusions we could use today. For example, we deliberately left certain spaces open and deliberately closed other spaces. And in our own play there were a couple of details we didn’t see last time, but this time we could use.”
