Pärnu JK Vaprus came from behind and took full advantage of playing nearly the entire second half with an extra man as they defeated Harju JK Laagri 2-1 away from home in the Premium Liiga’s 12th round.
The match at Laagri Arena started at a furious pace from the hosts, who completely overwhelmed Vaprus during the opening minutes. Harju immediately created several dangerous opportunities from set pieces, forcing goalkeeper OttNõmm into multiple important saves. First he denied Andre Järve from close range after a corner kick before reacting brilliantly again to stop Enriko Kajari’s header right on the goal line. Moments later Daniil Rudenko also tested the goalkeeper during another dangerous attacking sequence.
Harju continued piling on pressure and nearly found the breakthrough again in the 19th minute when Karel Eerme cut inside from the left and smashed an effort against the crossbar. The rebound eventually fell to Rudenko, but his attempt flew over the goal.
The deserved opening goal finally arrived moments later. Following a long throw-in from Järve, the ball bounced dangerously inside the six-yard box where Kristjan Kriis reacted quickest and fired Harju into a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Vaprus struggled early on but gradually settled into the game. Their first major chance arrived through Joosep Põder, who narrowly failed to connect with a dangerous low cross inside the area. As the half progressed, the visitors began controlling possession more effectively and creating pressure through set pieces delivered by Tristan Pajo.
Just before halftime Vaprus found the equaliser through a beautifully worked attacking move. A dangerous effort from Matthias Limberg was initially saved by goalkeeper Jan Vainula, but the rebound fell perfectly for Joosep Põder, who calmly tapped into the empty net in stoppage time to make it 1-1.
The turning point of the match arrived early in the second half. In the 57th minute Harju defender Enriko Kajari brought down Limberg near the edge of the penalty area and received his second yellow card of the afternoon, leaving the home side with ten men for more than half an hour.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Harju initially defended well and still threatened on counterattacks, with Rudenko continuing to look dangerous. Vaprus, however, increasingly dominated possession and territory as the match went on.
Eventually the pressure paid off in the 80th minute. Following Vaprus’ seventh corner of the evening, the ball bounced around inside a crowded penalty area before eventually falling kindly for Matthias Limberg from close range. The midfielder made no mistake, firing home from four metres out to complete the comeback and give Vaprus a 2-1 lead.
Harju nearly snatched a late equaliser when substitute Ramol Sillamaa smashed an effort against the crossbar in the closing stages, but Vaprus managed to survive the pressure and secure all three points.
The victory continues Vaprus’ strong recent form after now winning four of their last five league matches, while Harju suffered a third consecutive defeat following heavy losses against Flora and Levadia in previous rounds.
