Lithuanian football referees are continuing to make history on the international stage. Led by Donatas Rumšas, the officiating team recently became the first in the history of independent Lithuania to referee a UEFA club competition quarter-final. Now, they are set to surpass that milestone once again.
This week, the Lithuanian refereeing crew has been appointed to oversee the first leg of a UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final, an even greater achievement.
On April 30, the match will take place in Spain, where Rayo Vallecano will host France’s RC Strasbourg Alsace. Kick-off is scheduled for 10:00 PM.
Donatas Rumšas will serve as the main referee, assisted by Aleksandras Radiušas and Dovydas Sužiedėlis.
According to Sergejus Slyva, president of the Lithuanian Football Referees Association, this appointment reflects an outstanding period for the entire team:
“This appointment crowns an excellent year for Donatas and his entire crew. He has been working at the international level for more than a decade, and this has been his best year both internationally and domestically. Last year, he was named Lithuania’s best referee, so it is fair to say he is currently in the peak phase of his career. This is a major achievement for our refereeing community and Lithuanian football as a whole.”
