In their first home match of 2026, Lithuania suffered a narrow defeat to the Georgian national team in Kaunas.

As announced by the Lithuanian Football Federation, the match drew an encouraging crowd, with a total attendance of 7,726 spectators at the stadium.

From the opening moments of the match, Georgian star Kvicha Kvaratskhelia surged down the left flank, breezing past centre-back Vilius Armalas. With only a few meters separating him from goal, the PSG winger squared the ball into the middle, but Lithuanian defenders reacted quickly to clear the danger.

Kvaratskhelia threatened again in the 31st minute when Georgia were awarded a free kick. He unleashed a superb strike that rattled the crossbar, allowing Lithuania to keep the score level at 0:0.

Lithuania registered their first shot on target in the 56th minute. Following an excellent tackle by Armandas Kučys, Justas Lasickas unleashed a dangerous left-footed effort, forcing Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili into his first meaningful save of the match.

In the 69th minute, Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze broke forward down the left flank, bearing down on goal, when Lithuanian right-back Pijus Širvys brought him down with a challenge. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

The Villarreal forward stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, placing his shot into the right corner.

Fourteen minutes later, Mikautadze struck again. After a surging run down the right flank, Nika Gagnidze delivered a perfectly weighted pass, leaving Mikautadze with the simple task of finishing into an open goal.

With only a few seconds remaining, Lithuania’s star Gvidas Gineitis was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the match.

The March campaign ended in a 0:2 defeat to Georgia, despite an encouraging performance from the home side.
