Latvia took a crucial step toward preserving their place in UEFA Nations League C with a disciplined 1-0 victory over Gibraltar in the first leg of their promotion/relegation play-off. A second-half penalty from Vladislavs Gutkovskis proved decisive, giving the visitors a slender but valuable advantage ahead of Tuesday’s return fixture at Skonto Stadium.

Head coach Paolo Nicolato opted for a largely expected starting XI, with the only mild surprise being Roberts Veips earning just his fifth international cap. Latvia began cautiously, showing signs of early miscommunication that resulted in a nervy opening spell and a quick booking for Veips. The first real test came in the 12th minute when Gibraltar goalkeeper Jaylan Hankins was called into action, reacting well to divert a dangerous delivery from Andrejs Cigaņiks behind for a corner. Latvia, playing into the wind, relied heavily on long balls targeting Gutkovskis, though mistimed runs repeatedly caught the striker offside.

As the half progressed, Latvia asserted control through possession and wing play, with Cigaņiks particularly influential on the left. The visitors’ best opportunity before the break came when his cross found Jānis Ikaunieks, whose header drifted narrowly wide. Despite Latvia’s growing control, Gibraltar remained dangerous on the counter. James Scanlon sparked one of their best moments, driving forward from midfield before being brought down by Antonijs Černomordijs near the penalty area. The resulting free kick caused problems, with Nicholas Pozo’s effort deflecting just wide. Gibraltar continued to threaten late in the half, notably through Jaiden Bartolo, who created space for a shot inside the box but failed to hit the target.

Latvia emerged unchanged after the interval but with the wind now in their favor – a factor that noticeably shifted momentum. They began to dominate territory and create more sustained pressure inside Gibraltar’s penalty area. The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute when, after regaining possession in midfield, Gutkovskis surged forward, outpacing his marker before being brought down in the box. The striker stepped up himself and calmly converted the penalty, marking his 14th international goal and putting Latvia ahead.

Latvia had opportunities to extend their lead, with Ikaunieks again going close but failing to find the net from a promising position. Nicolato managed his squad carefully, withdrawing Gutkovskis in the 74th minute to avoid suspension risk and introducing Dario Šits. Further substitutions, including Deniss Meļņiks and Kristaps Grabovskis, helped Latvia maintain defensive stability while continuing to search for a second goal. There was a late scare when Gibraltar appeared to force the ball over the line following a set piece, but the referee ruled out the effort for a foul on the goalkeeper.

At full time, Latvia emerged with a deserved 1-0 win, combining improved second-half control with defensive resilience. While the margin remains narrow, the result places them in a strong position heading into the decisive second leg in Rīga, where they will look to secure their Nations League C status in front of home support.
