About Livonian Winter League

Contested at the beginning of the year, Livonian Winter League takes inspiration from the Livonia Cup – a type of a regional super cup conceived of by the Estonian Football Federation and contested by Latvian and Estonian domestic league champions on semi-regular basis (2003-2005, 2008, 2011, 2018, 2023, 2024).

Inaugurated before start of season 2023, the Winter League takes the same idea but scales it up to a three-tiered league, where Latvian and Estonian clubs are matched against each other based on their performance in their respective domestic competitions the previous season.

Livonian Winter League (and the Livonia Cup), takes its name from the historical lands of Livonia, which were conquered during the Northern Crusades of 12th and 13th centuries, and encompassed most of the modern-day Latvia and Estonia. These territories are also known as Terra Mariana. In one way or another, Livonia continued to exist all the way until the formation of modern-day Latvian and Estonian states in 1918. This is also why Lithuania was never part of either the Livonia Cup or the League.

Despite its name, the Livonian League is not really a league – it is three parallel competitions without opportunities for promotion or relegation. Twelve teams from each country are arranged into three groups – teams that finished 1st-4th in their domestic top league in group A, 5th-8th in group B, 9th-10th in group C (joined by two top teams from the second tier). Teams from one country only play teams from the other country in a single leg only. When all matches have been played, team with the most points get the Cup. Since the Livonian Winter League is a friendly competition, no results have any bearing on any UEFA metrics or rankings.

But, there is so much more at stake here – the pride of being the Champions of Livonia!
