Liepāja began their Spanish training camp with an encouraging 3-1 friendly victory over Swedish side AIK on Tuesday.
Head coach Andreas Alm was pleased not only with the result but also with the performance, as Liepāja led 2-1 at the break thanks to goals from Amars Haidara and Danila Patijčuks. AIK briefly equalised in the first half after a deflected effort led to a scramble in the box, but Liepāja restored their advantage before half-time when Patijčuks scored a header.
The Latvian club changed almost the entire line-up after the break, yet kept control of the game’s tempo and carried an attacking threat down the flanks. Goalkeeper Dāvis Ošs made a number of key saves as AIK showed more bite going forward in the second half.
Liepāja sealed the win late on when newcomer Fellipe Vieira’s corner found veteran defender Vjačeslavs Isajevs, who made no mistake and struck home emphatically in the 88th minute.
AIK’s 36-year-old goalkeeper Kristofers Noordfelt and former Kosovo attacking midfielder Bersants Celina started the game today. Both have played in the top leagues of England, Turkey, and the Netherlands, and Celina has also played in France. The starting lineup also included 17-year-old Lithuanian defender Oskar Pukelis from the AIK academy.
Alm said his side had delivered the kind of football he wants to see. “A very good win and, most importantly, quality football,” he said. “The whole team worked at a serious level – that attitude has to continue in our preparation.”
As for AIK, they have narrowly defeated Flora 1-0 earlier in this pre-season and, during last summer, knocked out Paide out of the Conference League.
