FC RFS have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Portuguese player Matheus Clemente, securing the 27-year-old on a long-term deal ahead of the new Latvian Virslīga season.

Clemente joins from FK Auda, where he spent the past two and a half years and developed into one of the league’s most reliable performers. His arrival marks RFS’ second signing of the winter window following the addition of defender Shina Kumater, as last season’s runners-up continue preparations for another title challenge.

During his spell with FK Auda, Clemente made 81 appearances, contributing six goals and six assists across all competitions. In the most recent Virslīga campaign, he featured in 24 league matches and scored three goals, including one against his new club RFS in the season opener.

The Portuguese midfielder was also part of the FK Auda side that lifted the Latvian Cup, and he expressed his excitement about the move when speaking after signing:

“I am very happy to join RFS – a club that offered me an exciting new challenge in my career and one that also suits my family well. I hope I can contribute to the team and help us achieve all our goals, making our fans very happy.”

Clemente has signed a three-year deal with RFS. He came through the academy system at Benfica before spending several seasons in Portugal’s lower divisions. Prior to moving to Latvia, he also gained international experience with Bulgarian top-flight club Cherno More and Cypriot side Akritas Chlorakas.

RFS are heading into the new season following a period of change. Long-time goalkeeper Pāvels Šteinbors has retired, while Elvis Stuglis, Petr Mareš, Rendijs Šibass and Roberts Meļķis have all departed after the expiration of their contracts.
