The Lithuania U17 national team produced a major upset today in Scotland, defeating England U17 1-0 in the 2026 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifiers. The only goal of the match was scored by Tomas Jonyla, a defender from the West Ham United academy.

In their second group-stage match, the team coached by Nerijus Mačiulis earned a remarkable victory after losing 0-2 to Sweden in their opening fixture. Lithuania will conclude their qualifying campaign on Monday, facing hosts Scotland.

The game against England started brightly for Lithuania. Midway through the first half, defender Tomas Jonyla made the most of a chance near the opposition goal, sending the ball past the English goalkeeper to give his side a 1-0 lead.

For the remainder of the half, Lithuania defended resolutely, holding on to their narrow advantage. In the second half, Mačiulis’s players continued to defend with discipline, successfully repelling England’s attacks and preserving their lead until the final whistle to secure a famous victory.

The top two teams in the group will progress to the A Division in the spring to compete for places in the UEFA European U17 Championship final tournament, while the sides finishing third and fourth will move to the B Division.
