As reported today by futbolas.lt, Žalgiris Vilnius appoints interim director Mindaugas Kasperūnas after financial collapse and Venslovaitienė’s disputed exit.
Last Friday, shareholders of Žalgiris Vilnius appointed Mindaugas Kasperūnas as the club’s interim director following a vote. Longtime club chief executive Vilma Venslovaitienė did not attend in person, as she was represented by her lawyer and later informed the team that the election was unlawful. However, on Thursday, the Lithuanian Register Center confirmed the official minutes of the shareholders’ meeting.
The crisis stems from Žalgiris’ disappointing run in European competitions. Defeats against clubs from Malta and Northern Ireland derailed hopes of securing even the minimum projected budget. According to Sportas.lt, the club’s accounts are currently empty. Before stepping aside, Venslovaitienė authorized player bonuses, though, as one former Žalgiris player noted, they were the smallest he had ever received while at the club.
One of Kasperūnas’ first tasks as interim director is expected to be replacing head coach Vladimiras Čeburinas. “I want this to be our Žalgiris! And I want to lay the foundation for that,” Kasperūnas told Sportas.lt regarding his new role.
Žalgiris will play their next A Lyga fixture on Sunday at home against Panevėžys.
