In a move that could reignite his career, Latvia international goalkeeper Nils Toms Puriņš has joined SK Super Nova on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper, who currently plays for Riga FC, will be aiming to secure regular first-team football after falling down the pecking order at his parent club. With Krišjānis Zviedris now the established number one and Kristaps Zommers the preferred back-up, Puriņš’s opportunities in the Virslīga have been limited this season.

Puriņš brings a wealth of experience with him to Super Nova. Since making his debut for Riga FC, he has racked up 96 appearances, conceding just 61 goals and impressively keeping 55 clean sheets. A reliable presence between the posts, he earned his first Latvia national team cap in June 2023, playing the full 90 minutes in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier against Turkey. He has since gone on to represent his country three times.

For SK Super Nova, the loan move solves a key issue in goal. The club had been lacking a proven, experienced keeper since Frenks Orols was recalled and reassigned to Grobiņa. In his absence, 20-year-old Dāvis Veisbuks has made nine league and cup appearances, showing promise but also highlighting the need for a more seasoned option.

This move gives Puriņš a chance to rebuild momentum in his career and stay sharp in competitive play, potentially keeping him in the frame for future national team call-ups. It also bolsters Super Nova’s hopes of climbing the Virslīga table, providing much-needed stability at the back.

If Puriņš can replicate his past form and reassert himself as one of Latvia’s top keepers, this temporary switch might be just what both player and club need.
