The Vilnius derby took centre stage in the 17th round of the Toplyga as FK Žalgiris appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory before surviving a spirited second-half comeback attempt from FK Riteriai to secure a 3-2 win.

As expected, Žalgiris controlled the early stages and quickly established themselves as the dominant side. Their pressure paid off midway through the first half when Bryan Teixeira delivered a dangerous ball into the area and Nikola Petković was on hand to finish, giving the hosts a deserved lead.

The defending champions continued to push forward and doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute. Matas Vareika’s delivery caused problems inside the Riteriai penalty area, with Marko Karamarko inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.

Just moments later Žalgiris struck again. Vareika, who had already contributed to the second goal, got on the scoresheet himself by beating Simone Moschino to make it 3-0 and seemingly put the derby beyond doubt before halftime.

However, the second half told a different story. Riteriai found a way back into the match when Deimantas Rimpa reacted quickest to a scramble inside the Žalgiris penalty area and fired home to reduce the deficit.

The league’s bottom-placed side refused to give up and continued to push for another goal. Their persistence was rewarded in the 74th minute when Arvydas Novikovas provided the assist and Karamarko, looking to make amends for his earlier own goal, found the net to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finale.

With momentum firmly on the side of Riteriai, Žalgiris were forced to dig deep during the closing stages. Despite the pressure, they managed to protect their narrow advantage and avoid a dramatic collapse, securing all three points in the Vilnius derby.

The victory moves Žalgiris onto 25 points, level with fourth-placed Sūduva in the standings, while Riteriai remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just three points from 17 matches.
