In the 28th round of the Lithuanian A Lyga, FK Žalgiris secured a confident 2-0 win over Gargždai Banga, marking a successful debut for their new head coach Rolandas Džiaukštas.
The match started with early chances for the home side. In the 8th minute, Banga defender Deividas Malžinskas unleashed a long-range strike, but Žalgiris goalkeeper Carlos Olses was alert, pushing the ball to safety. Soon after, Sherwin Seedorf tested the goal as well, but could not find the target.
The first half remained cagey, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. However, in added time, Nemanja Mihailović broke the deadlock for Žalgiris, curling a precise shot into the bottom far corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The second half saw Žalgiris dominate possession and press high. Early in the half, Joris Moutachy rattled the post with a well-taken strike, while Motiejus Burba, making his first appearance in a long spell, also tested goalkeeper Mantas Bertašius without success.
The victory was sealed in the 74th minute when Žalgiris’ attacking talisman Liviu Antal earned and converted a penalty, putting the game beyond doubt at 2-0.
With the win, Žalgiris catch up FA Šiauliai in the league table who are also with 43 points, while Banga remain eighth with 32 points. Banga next league match is next Sunday when they will host FK Sūduva, while FK Žalgiris on Friday will play an away game against FK Riteriai
