After a painful 3-0 defeat against Kauno Žalgiris over the weekend, FK Žalgiris received more bad news on Wednesday, with one of the team’s leaders, Giedrius Matulevičius, ruled out for the foreseeable future with injury suffered during the Žalgiris derby. The Marijampolė-born midfielder collided with an opponent and was substituted on the 61st minute.

Tests carried out on Tuesday confirmed the worst: Giedrius has been diagnosed with cruciate ligament damage. A return to active sport after such an injury is a long one and can take from nine to 12 months,” the club said.

The club also said that Matas Vareika and Klaudijus Upstas missed the most recent match because of injuries, with their return expected in the coming weeks.

Carlos Olses and Paulius Golubickas, who suffered heavy bruising in the match against Hegelmann, did not train for some time.

Nedas Klimavičius, on the other hand, is recovering quickly from injury and has started individual training.

A serious injury had already ruled Darius Stankevičius out before the start of the season. There is no clarity over when he may return.
