The second round of the 2026 Toplyga season begins tonight at Sportima Arena in Vilnius, where FK Žalgiris Vilnius host FK Panevėžys. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 local time, with both sides searching for their first league victory of the campaign.
Matchday one produced several surprises, including one involving the Vilnius club. In the season opener, Rolandas Džiaukštas’ team failed to protect a one-goal advantage late in the second half and conceded a stoppage-time winner in a 2-3 defeat against Džiugas Telšiai. It was a frustrating start for a side considered among the title contenders.
Panevėžys, meanwhile, were held to a goalless draw against Sūduva. The result could have been worse if not for veteran goalkeeper Vytautas Černiauskas, whose interventions helped secure a point in a tight encounter.
Both teams split their meetings evenly last season, with generally high-scoring matches between the two. Only one of their league clashes produced as few as three goals, while the others were more open affairs. It was Panevėžys, coached by Roland Vrabec, who halted Džiaukštas’ impressive early run in charge of Žalgiris last autumn. After taking over in September, Džiaukštas guided the Vilnius side through an eight-match unbeaten streak before Panevėžys ended it with a 3-1 victory in the final game of the season.
One of the key storylines tonight will be whether Romanian forward Liviu Antal can extend his scoring streak. The Žalgiris striker has now scored in 10 consecutive league matches dating back to last season, most recently converting a penalty in the opening-round defeat to Džiugas. His form remains a central factor in Vilnius’ attacking output as they look to respond immediately and avoid dropping more important points early in the season.
