Pärnu JK Vaprus have joined Flora in the semi-finals of the Evald Tipner Estonian Cup, securing a 2-1 victory over Esiliiga side Tartu Welco after a tense second half.
Welco, who began their Esiliiga campaign strongly five days earlier with an impressive 3-0 win over relegated top-flight side JK Tallinna Kalev, were hoping to cause an upset against Premium Liiga club Vaprus. The Pärnu side, meanwhile, were aiming to reach the Estonian Cup semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
The opening goal took time to arrive. Towards the end of the first half, the hosts confirmed their status as favourites by scoring from a set piece. After a corner kick, Mark Lepik headed the ball across the goal towards the far post, where defender Kevin Aloe was positioned and finished from close range to make it 1-0.
In the 57th minute of the second half, Lepik added a goal of his own to give Vaprus a more comfortable lead. The forward received the ball from Sander Kapper, ran into the penalty area, created space for himself and fired a shot into the near corner to bring the Pärnu side closer to the semi-finals.
Tartu Welco, however, did not give up. In the 74th minute, Johannes Petmanson pulled one goal back with an excellent individual effort. Receiving the ball on the right flank, he beat two Vaprus defenders in succession before placing a precise shot into the far top corner past the goalkeeper.
Vaprus supporters were briefly concerned just two minutes later when the ball found the Pärnu net again, but the goal was disallowed after the referee identified an offside in the build-up, bringing relief to both the team and their fans.
Welco were unable to create another dangerous opportunity in the remaining minutes, allowing Vaprus to hold on to the win and reach the Evald Tipner Estonian Cup semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
