Matchday 11 of the 2025 Latvian Virslīga continued with a familiar theme of recent weeks – a seemingly unstoppable Riga FC rapidly gaining ground on defending and beleaguered Champions FC RFS.
Why are RFS beleaguered? That seems to be the running question among fans of both RFS and their opponents alike. Some say it is down to a post-Europa league fatigue, others suggest underwhelming performances of new arrivals as the main culprit. Viktors Morozs, the head coach, seems to support the latter argument himself, repeatedly noting lack of leadership and responsibility-taking among ‘some players’ in his squad.
This was yet again evident as RFS travelled to Jelgava after 3 very difficult points. Jelgava have shown themselves to be a distinctive home team this season, second only to Auda. A generally poor quality game finally exploded in the 76th minute as the home team opened score but quickly fell to two rapid-fire goals from Elvis Stuglis. What seemed like a repeat of their first game of the season, however, did not come to pass as Jelgava put away a stunning equaliser in the 94th minute, ending the match 2-2 and leaving RFS bitterly disappointed now that their once impressive lead over the second place had withered down to a mere point.
In battle for the second place, Auda hosted their big brother, Riga FC. After a 2-2 draw in their first game, Riga FC came out guns blazing and demonstrated clinical finishing, capitalizing on Auda’s mistakes and scoring 3 unanswered goals in the first half. Auda recovered somewhat in the second half but a converted penalty was not enough to turn the tide of the game, despite Jurģis Kalns pointing out a myriad of his opponents’ tactical mistakes that his team failed to take advantage of.
Elsewhere, Tukums 2000 were held to a draw by Liepāja who managed to score an equaliser in the 78th minute. The flagship Kurzeme club has been struggling to show consistency and, apparently, decided to swap their coach duo – their second sacking of the season – in favour of a foreign specialist after this match, although official announcement is still forthcoming.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of Matchday 11 was Grobiņa’s 1-0 win over Daugavpils. Grobiņa finally demonstrated persuasive football and brought danger to bear on Dauvapils goal. Despite this win, they still remain in the relegation zone while Daugavpils continue to holding on the the 4th position.
