Two matches will take place today in the second round of the Estonian Premium Liiga. Newly promoted Nõmme United will host Pärnu JK Vaprus, while later in the day Kuressaare will face Tartu JK Tammeka in a meeting between two teams that suffered defeats in their opening matches.
The first match of the day kicks off at 12:30 local time, when Nõmme United welcome Vaprus. United have endured a difficult week, suffering two defeats against champions FC Flora. They lost 0-3 in the league opener last Saturday, and the two sides met again on Tuesday in the Evald Tipner Cup quarter-finals, where Nõmme United were defeated 1-3.
Pärnu Vaprus arrive in a much more positive situation after recording two wins in the past week. First, they produced an impressive comeback from two goals down to defeat Paide Linnameeskond 3-2 in the league, before securing a 2-1 victory over Tartu Welco in the Estonian Cup to reach the semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
This will be the clubs’ first official meeting since 2024, when Nõmme United last competed in the top division. During that season, Vaprus won three of the four meetings between the teams. From the last encounter starting lineup between the sides, four players from the Nõmme United are still with the team.
Later in the day, two teams still searching for their first goals and first points of the season will meet. Kuressaare, who lost away to Levadia, will host Tartu JK Tammeka, who were defeated 0-1 at home by Nõmme Kalju in the opening round.
Neither team was involved in the Estonian Cup quarter-finals during the week, having already been eliminated in earlier rounds of the competition.
Last season the two sides finished eighth and ninth respectively, with Tammeka ending the campaign two points ahead of Kuressaare. Tartu’s advantage was also reflected in their head-to-head record, as Tammeka won three of the four meetings, with Kuressaare claiming their only victory in the final stages of the season.
Their matches last year were also eventful. Two of the four games featured missed penalties, three matches included own goals, and two ended with red cards. It remains to be seen whether today’s clash will produce similar drama.
The second round of the Premium Liiga will conclude tomorrow with three matches.
