DFK Dainava Alytus who are currently sitting at the bottom of the 2025 TOPsport A Lyga with just two points from 12 matches, is reportedly close to appointing a new head coach following the departure of Ukrainian manager Sergei Kuznetsov.
According to Alytaus Naujienos, the struggling Dainava club is set to appoint 37-year-old Mergen Orazov, who has been at the helm of the Turkmenistan national team since 2023. A well-respected figure in Turkmen football, Orazov made his name coaching Ashgabat-based clubs Köpetdag and Ahal, leading the latter to a national championship and earning the title of Turkmenistan’s Coach of the Year in 2022.
In the wake of Kuznetsov’s exit, assistant coach Aleksej Pankovec temporarily stepped in to guide Dainava, but with results still lacking, the club is clearly hoping Orazov’s international pedigree can spark a much-needed turnaround.
Dainava’s next test will be a daunting one: an away clash this Sunday against defending league champions FK Žalgiris.
