Erko Jonne Tõugjas made his official debut for Halmstad as the Allsvenskan side opened their Swedish Cup group campaign with a 1-0 victory over third-tier Karlstad.
The 22-year-old centre-back, who signed his first contract abroad at the end of November after joining from Tallinna Flora, started the match and played the full 90 minutes. Halmstad secured all three points thanks to Joel Allansson’s goal in the 60th minute.
In another Swedish Cup group-stage fixture, Estonian goalkeeper Matvei Igonen kept a clean sheet as Degerfors IF began their campaign with a 3-0 win over third-division side Trelleborg.
The Swedish Cup features a group-stage format, with only the group winners advancing to the quarter-finals. Halmstad have been drawn alongside Malmö FF and second-tier side Varberg, with those matches scheduled for 1 March and 8 March. Malmö also started their group with a victory.
Meanwhile, Degerfors find themselves in a group with second-division Östersund and Allsvenskan side IFK Göteborg, who finished fourth in the league last season.
