FCI Levadia kept the pressure on title rivals FC Flora Tallinn with a commanding 3-0 victory over FC Kuressaare in Matchday 32 of the Premium Liiga, temporarily moving to the top of the table.
A month ago, it seemed Flora were pulling away in the title race, but Levadia’s stunning comeback in the Tallinn derby on September 24 – overturning a two-goal deficit to win – reignited the fight for the championship. With Flora stumbling in recent matches, both clubs came into this round level on points, with Flora leading only due to a superior head-to-head record.
Facing one of the league’s strugglers, Levadia head coach Curro Torres made two changes from the pre-break win over Tartu JK Tammeka, bringing in Ernest Agyiri and Mark Roosnupp. Kuressaare, meanwhile, kept the same starting XI from the previous league match where they drew against Paide.
Levadia laid the foundation for their win in the latter stages of the first half. In the 26th minute, after a corner caused chaos in the box, Nigerian defender Victory Iboro reacted quickest to smash the ball in from close range. Ten minutes later, another corner did the damage: Wendell flicked the delivery on, and captain Rasmus Peetson nodded home his third goal of the season.
The scoring spree was capped before the break when Mihkel Ainsalu headed in Wendell’s pinpoint cross for his fifth goal in four matches. It was a dominant first-half display from Levadia, leaving Kuressaare struggling to cope.
The second half was less explosive, partly because Levadia were reduced to ten men after Peetson was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul. Despite the setback, the hosts comfortably saw out the game without conceding.
With this result, Levadia recorded their fourth win over Kuressaare this season and moved to the top of the table – at least temporarily. Their next test comes in four days when they host Paide Linnameeskond. Kuressaare will be back in action sooner, visiting Pärnu JK Vaprus in three days.
