Tartu Tammeka have set out a three-year plan aimed at turning increased investment into a sustained push towards the Premium liiga’s top places.
The club say the long-term target is to be in contention for the Top 3 from the start of the 2028 season, with chief executive Kristjan Tiirik outlining a gradual rebuild under new head coach Karel Voolaid. “The bigger goal is to build the team step by step so that in the 2028 season we can play for a medal from the first round,” Tiirik said.
For 2026, Tammeka’s priority is to improve on last season’s results while integrating Voolaid and a number of new signings into the club. “This season’s objective is definitely to be better than last season in terms of results, to build the squad – to see how things work with the new head coach and new players, and what the next steps are to strengthen the team further,” Tiirik added.
Top 3 – and the European place that would likely follow in the Premium liiga – are not a new ambition at the club. A similar goal was stated nine years ago, with a strategy built around challenging for the top three by 2020 but Tammeka have so far been unable to bridge the gap to the leading sides. Their best league finish remains fifth, and they have routinely trailed the top three by at least 25 points. In three of the past five seasons they have instead been drawn into relegation battles, twice needing play-offs to retain their top-flight status.
Last season, they avoided relegation play-offs only thanks to final-round results elsewhere, ending the campaign 44 points behind third place. Now, the club point to structural changes over the past six months and a sharp rise in resources as the basis for renewed optimism.
