In the last match of the Virslīga Matchday 15, the newcomer Super Nova extended its streak of drawn matches to four straight games, clawing back in dramatic fashion to salvage a 1–1 result away to direct rival Grobiņa in Liepāja.
The matchup followed a familiar script. The last meeting between these two sides on April 10 also ended 1–1, with each team scoring in the first half. Heading into this round, they stood side-by-side in the league standings—Grobiņa seventh with 15 points, Super Nova just behind in eighth with 13.
Returning to the starting XI after a three-game absence was Andris Deklavs for Super Nova, while Grobiņa coach Viktors Dobrecovs made a single change from his last lineup—Maksims Fjodorovs came in for Gļebs Kļuškins, who began the game on the bench.
Grobiņa wasted no time creating danger, and in the 17th minute, they made their early pressure count. Jānis Krautmanis, the left-footed maestro, delivered a pinpoint cross that found Zakaria Sdaigui, who rose to expertly head the ball into the far top corner—his second goal of the season, both coming in May.
Super Nova responded with growing control over possession and came agonizingly close to equalizing early in the second half. After a corner kick, Ņikita Pinčuks made a double save—first stopping Kristers Augusts’ powerful header and then reacting quickly to deny Mārcis Ošs on the follow-up.
In the 80th minute, Super Nova nearly leveled again. Second-half substitute Jevgēņijs Miņins threaded a perfect through ball to Dmytro Sula, who found himself one-on-one with the keeper but dragged his shot just wide of the post.
Persistent attacking finally paid off for Super Nova in stoppage time. Ošs kept a play alive along the end line, and once again it was Miņins delivering the key assist—finding Sula, who this time made no mistake from close range. The Ukrainian striker scored his first goal since mid-March, capping off a well-deserved equalizer for the visitors.
This result mirrored the first-round encounter between the two sides, which also finished 1–1.
After a dismal stretch of eight games without a win (0-1-7), Grobiņa continues an impressive May campaign, picking up 11 points from a possible 15 this month alone, while this result for Super Nova marks their eighth draw in 15 matches.
In the final round before the international break, Grobiņa face a tough test on Saturday, traveling to defending champions RFS. Super Nova will be back home on Sunday, hosting Daugavpils in search of a long-awaited victory.
