Latvian international Alvis Jaunzems and his club Stal Mielec wrapped up a turbulent Ekstraklasa season with a 2–2 draw away to Warsaw giants Legia on Saturday — a spirited finish to a campaign that ultimately ended in relegation.
Despite already being condemned to the drop before kickoff, Stal showed resilience in their final match of the season. Jaunzems started in defense and was subbed off in the final minute of regular time, giving 20-year-old David Zemba his top-flight debut.
The match burst into life in the second half. In the 57th minute, Łukasz Wołczyński converted a penalty to put the visitors ahead. Seven minutes later, Legia responded through Tomáš Pekhart. Stal regained the lead in the 77th thanks to Mateusz Matras, but the advantage was short-lived — Paweł Wszołek equalized just two minutes later to seal the 2–2 result.
The draw left Stal in 16th place with 31 points from 34 matches, marking a disappointing follow-up to their 11th-place finish the previous season. Meanwhile, Lech Poznan claimed the league title in a dramatic campaign.
The 25-year-old Jaunzems has been a consistent figure for Stal over the past two seasons, racking up 59 appearances and scoring twice. With a clause in his contract allowing for an early exit in the event of relegation, the Latvian defender is widely expected to leave the club this summer.
