St. Pauli will be without Estonia captain Karol Mets for around three weeks after the centre-back suffered a calf problem in Saturday’s 1-0 Bundesliga win away to Hoffenheim.
The 32-year-old started the match but was withdrawn at half-time, later explaining he felt an unfamiliar pain early on. “At the start of the game I felt something different in my calf, a new kind of pain for me,” Mets told Soccernet.ee. “At half-time we decided to take me off.”
Scans the following day revealed a small tear in the soleus muscle in the lower part of his calf. Mets said the injury was not serious and believes he will be fully match-fit again after a three-week break. “Luckily I listened to my body in time and the physios managed to convince me to come off. It was the right decision,” he added.
The timing also puts his involvement with Estonia in doubt for a friendly tournament in Rwanda later this month. Estonia are scheduled to play Kenya on 27 March, then meet either Rwanda or Grenada on 30 March.
St. Pauli, who are fighting to stay up, have three league matches during Mets’ expected absence: Eintracht Frankfurt on 8 March, Borussia Mönchengladbach on 13 March and Freiburg on 22 March.
