Latvian international goalkeeper Sofja Ņesterova will not be continuing with Werder Bremen beyond the 2024/25 season, the Frauen-Bundesliga club has confirmed.
The 23-year-old joined Werder in January in a mid-season move, providing necessary reinforcement between the posts after the team faced changes in the goalkeeping lineup. Serving primarily as the understudy to Swiss international Livia Peng, Ņesterova went on to make two Bundesliga appearances during her time in Bremen, including one full match in March after Peng suffered an injury.
“Sofja joined us on short notice in the winter, and we are very grateful for her commitment,” said Birte Brüggemann, head of women’s and girls’ football at SV Werder. “Her contract is set to expire this summer, as agreed. We thank her for the time she spent with us in green and white and wish her all the best for the future.”
Werder Bremen closed out the season in seventh place in the Bundesliga and reached the final of the DFB-Pokal, where they fell to giants Bayern Munich.
Before her stint in Germany, Ņesterova played for RFS Women in Latvia, helping the team finish as league runners-up and claim the Latvian Cup. On the international stage, she has earned 20 caps as the Latvian national team goalkeeper.
Reflecting on her time at the club, Ņesterova shared an farewell: “I want to thank the club, the team, and the coaching staff for these months in this wonderful city. It was a great honor to represent such a historic club. A special thanks to our fans who supported us in every moment. It was a pleasure to play for the Green and Whites, and I will always carry them in my heart.”
