Round 2 of the TOPLYGA saw FK Džiugas Telšiai come close to securing a second consecutive victory, but they ultimately had to settle for a 1-1 draw against FC Hegelmann at the Marijampolė Football Arena indoor venue.

Hegelmann entered the match looking to bounce back from a 0-2 defeat to Banga Gargždai in the opening round, while Džiugas had stunned Žalgiris Vilnius 3-2 in their season opener thanks to Ronald Sobowale’s dramatic stoppage-time winner.

Hegelmann head coach Mikel Aramburu Erneta made two changes to his starting lineup. Experienced Donatas Kazlauskas made his first start of the season, and former Cameroon international Samuel Oum Gouet – who featured twice at the 2022 World Cup – made his official club debut. Meanwhile, Džiugas manager Andrius Lipskis kept faith with the same eleven that started the victory over Žalgiris.

In the first half, Sobowale twice threatened Hegelmann’s goal, but goalkeeper Lukas Paukštė reacted well to deny him on both occasions. In the 26th minute, however, Hegelmann struck first. A well-worked move down the right flank ended with Esmilis Kaušinis delivering a cross into the box, where Kader Njoya Abdel escaped his marker and finished with a single touch to score the club’s first goal of the new season.

The goal gave Hegelmann the lead – a moment that goalkeeper Lukas Paukštė could celebrate, even as he faced his younger brother Marius Paukštė, who was guarding the net for Džiugas at the other end.

After halftime, Džiugas gradually took control in spells and found their equaliser in the 73rd minute. Ibrahim Cisse burst forward and delivered a precise pass to Sobowale, who calmly finished to score for the second consecutive match.

The hosts nearly snatched all three points in dramatic fashion. Deep into stoppage time, a counterattack fell kindly to substitute Tomas Stelmokas, but his effort crashed against the post and another visitors forward could not get to the rebound, denying Džiugas a late winner.

The draw leaves Džiugas with four points from two matches, placing them inside the top three early in the season, while Hegelmann collected their first point of the campaign.
