Aleksandr Šapovalov is set for another summer of decisions after spending the past two and a half seasons in Greece’s second tier, where he has already represented three clubs.
The 23-year-old Estonian striker moved to Greece in January 2024, joining PAOK’s B team and scoring five goals in 13 appearances across the second half of the campaign.
He then signed for Niki Volos and, over a season and a half, made 28 appearances, scoring eight times and providing two assists. However, Šapovalov left the club in January after losing his place following changes behind the scenes.
“When I came back in the summer there was a new head coach and the team had changed a lot,” Šapovalov told Soccernet.ee. “I scored in the first match and after that I played a lot, but then something happened and I didn’t play any more. When I spoke to the head coach in the winter, he told me he no longer counted on me.”
Šapovalov said he faced a choice between staying to fight for minutes or moving on, and opted to leave after discussions with both the coach and his agent.
“They brought in three new players in the winter and the head coach said I wouldn’t get to play,” he added. “We thought it was better to go somewhere I can play. It was a decision made by me and the coach.”
