Matchday 14 of the TonyBet Latvian Higher League featured five games across the country, highlighted by Riga FC extending their winning streak to eight, Grobiņa going four games unbeaten, and RFS bouncing back with a solid victory after last round’s setback.

At the top of the bill was Riga FC, who extended their winning streak to eight matches with a hard-earned 2:0 win over FK Liepāja. The capital club once again showed their mental and tactical steel, playing the final 30 minutes with ten men following a VAR-assisted red card to Anthony Contreras. Ironically, it was Contreras who opened the scoring in comical fashion, when a clearance by Oskars Vientiess ricocheted off the Costa Rican’s back-side and into the net. Marko Regža sealed the win in the second half, tapping in from close range after Meissa Diop’s dazzling run and cross. Despite Liepāja’s efforts late on and several last-gasp scrambles, Riga stood firm and took three crucial points at Skonto Stadium.

On the second game in two-days inside the Skonto Stadium hosts FK Auda and the visitors BFC Daugavpils fought out an eventful 1:1 draw, marking the fifth straight match without a win for both sides. The game was defined by a chaotic first half: Tin Hrvoj received a straight red early for Auda, but even with ten men, the visitors took the lead through Jeudi Stevenson’s bizarre ricochet goal just before the break. Daugavpils responded in the 79th minute through Mohamed Koné, who smashed in a stunning volley after a high looping cross from returnee Shunsuke Murakami who made his first appearance after missing the last four league matches. The gamealso featured two disallowed goals for Daugavpils Boubou Diallo and a dramatic pace until the final whistle – but neither side could find a winner.

RFS, the defending champions, bounced back strongly after their loss to Liepāja last week by blanking FK Metta 2:0 in front of a healthy home crowd. Dmitrijs Zelenkovs opened the scoring early with a fine individual effort against his former team, and Stefan Panić curled in a beautiful free-kick early in the second half to secure RFS’s 10th win of the season. Metta showed flashes of resistance, but their winless streak extended to nine games since their surprise victory over RFS in the first round.

In the battle near the basement, FK Grobiņa claimed a vital 2:0 victory over FK Tukums 2000, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table. Deivids Dobrecovs converted a first-half penalty won after a reckless challenge on Tomass Mickevičs, and Oļģerds Raščevskis finished off a counterattack in the 80th minute to double the lead. Grobiņa now look like a side finding form at the right time as they now are undefeated in four straight games.

The Matchday 14 ended with the match inside the Jānis Skredelis Stadium where SK Super Nova and FS Jelgava played out the first goalless draw of May. Jelgava dominated the possession but failed to convert their few chances. Captain Kristers Penkevics’ late injury was a sour note for the visitors, who now sit just one point behind Auda in fourth.

The Virslīga Matchday 15 will start on Saturday with FK Metta hosting Riga FC and will end on Monday when FK Grobiņa will take on SK Super Nova.
