In Round 29 of the Latvian Virslīga, Riga FC sent out a powerful statement at home, crushing FK Auda 6-0 and doubling their advantage at the top of the table over nearest rivals RFS, who stumbled against FS Jelgava. The win was fueled by a brace from Brazilian striker Reginaldo Ramires.
Auda who were having a tough time in the league the last few weeks on the brighter side welcomed back Tin Hrvoj and Jeudi Stevenson after almost two months out, while Tanzanian midfielder Omar Mvungi made his debut. Unfortunately for Stevenson, his return quickly turned sour – his handball in the penalty area gifted Riga a spot kick in the 16th minute. Ramires confidently converted it to make it 1-0.
Just two minutes later, the league leaders doubled their advantage. A pinpoint cross from Maksims Toņiševs found Costa Rican midfielder Orlando Galo, who calmly finished from close range for his fifth goal of the campaign 2-0. Auda nearly clawed one back in the 33rd minute when Oskars Rubenis set up Stevenson perfectly at the far post, but instead of slotting into an empty corner, the forward shot straight at goalkeeper Krišjānis Zviedris, who produced a brilliant reflex save.
But in the second half it went all downhill for the visits as in the 63rd minute, Riga extended their lead after a long-range strike from Iago Siqueira was saved by goalkeeper Niks Aleksandrovs onto the post, and Ramires was first to the rebound, tucking it home for 3-0. Teams top-goalscorer Marko Regža who came as a substitutewasted no time, converting Meissa Diop’s cross at the near post for his 13th of the season 4-0.
The rout continued in the 77th minute when an Auda defender accidentally put the ball into his own net following an El Bachir Ngom set piece 5-0. Only a minute later, Baba Musah sealed the demolition by heading in Siqueira’s delivery (6-0).
This marks Auda’s heaviest loss since their return to the top flight. Riga now hold a six-point cushion over RFS in the title race, while Auda sit fifth, level on points with Daugavpils.
