All ten clubs of the Latvian Virslīga were in action today, playing the penultimate 35th round of the season. With the title and European spots already decided, the last remaining intrigue lies at the bottom of the table – where three clubs still face the threat of relegation, meaning the decisive battle for survival will be settled on the final matchday.
The key clash of the day saw FS Jelgava host FK Metta. While Jelgava had already secured their place in next year’s top flight, Metta still had hope after a dramatic last-second win over FK Auda in the previous round, courtesy of Kristofers Rēķis’ stoppage-time goal.
Jelgava struck early in the 6th minute, when Kingsley Emenike received the ball inside the box and, surrounded by defenders, managed to find the net – 1-0. Metta equalized later in the first half after Jelgava captain Kristers Penkevics handled the ball in the area, allowing Rūdolfs Kļavinskis to convert the resulting penalty – his second goal of the season.
Early in the second half, Metta turned the game around, as Sadiq Saleh played a perfect through ball to Kļavinskis, who finished calmly one-on-one for his second of the match and a vital 2-1 lead. However, with less than 30 minutes remaining, Filip Hašek produced a spectacular long-range free kick, firing the ball into the top corner – a strike that will surely rank among the goals of the season in the Virslīga.
Neither side could find a winner, and the match ended 2-2, with Metta earning a potentially crucial point. Still, they remain bottom of the table, one point behind SK Super Nova, with one round to play. Metta will close their season next Sunday at home against BFC Daugavpils.
FS Jelgava vs FK Metta – 2:2 (1:1)
Goals: Emenike 6′, F. Hašek 65′ | Kļavinskis 36′ (Penalty Kick) 54′
Grobiņa earn first-ever point against champions Riga FC
In another important fixture, FK Grobiņa earned a valuable 1-1 home draw against newly crowned champions Riga FC, who were coming off their Latvian Cup Final defeat.
Marko Regža opened the scoring for Riga in the first half – his 16th goal of the season – but Artjoms Puzirevskis equalized in the 66th minute on a counterattack with a precise finish past Kristaps Zommers. Despite controlling possession, Riga couldn’t find a winner, and Grobiņa collected their first-ever point against the capital club.
The draw extends Grobiņa’s lead over 9th-placed SK Super Nova to two points, meaning survival will come down to the final round. Grobiņa will remain in the Virslīga if both Super Nova and Metta fail to win – or if they themselves avoid defeat in their final game against FK Auda.
FK Grobiņa vs Riga FC – 1:1 (0:1)
Goals: Puzirevskis 66′ | Regža 22”
Super Nova fall to RFS, remain in relegation trouble
At the other end of the survival fight, SK Super Nova suffered a 1-3 home defeat to FC RFS.
Super Nova missed a golden chance early on, when Agris Glaudāns failed to hit the target from close range – and RFS punished them moments later, as Jānis Ikaunieks capitalized on a defensive mistake to round the keeper and finish from a tight angle.
The visitors extended their lead in the second half thanks to Roberts Savaļnieks, who came off the bench and quickly delivered two perfect corner kicks – both converted by the club’s Serbian players: Aleksandar Filipović, scoring his first RFS goal, and Darko Lemajić, netting his 28th of the season. Super Nova grabbed a late consolation through Emīls Sprukts, who scored his first-ever Virslīga goal, but it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.
Super Nova remain in a difficult position heading into the final matchday and will host FK Liepāja next Sunday in a must-win clash.
SK Super Nova vs FC RFS – 1:3 (0:1)
Goals: Sprukts 90′ | Ikaunieks 16′, Filipovic 68′, Lemajic 74′
