In the 21st round of the TonyBet Virslīga, league leaders Riga FC showcased their dominance with a convincing 3-0 home victory to set a new club record for consecutive league wins, defeating Jelgava at the iconic Skonto Stadium.
Jelgava’s manager fielded several new faces in this match. Gļebs Žaleiko, on loan from RFS until the end of the season, started in the lineup, while Czech newcomers Filip Hašek and Marek Polašek made their Virslīga debuts after coming on in the second half. This marked an effort by coach Aleksandrs Basovs to strengthen the squad amid a challenging run, as Jelgava had won only one of their last seven games heading into this fixture.
Meanwhile, Riga and coach Adrián Gula, who was looking to set the record, made a few changes in the starting lineup, with Emīls Birka making his first start as a Riga FC player.
Despite Jelgava’s early pressure — marked by a threatening shot on goal in the very first minute — Riga quickly settled into their rhythm and took control of the game.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Bryan Peña skillfully found space through a tightly packed defense and fired a precise shot into the net. The momentum swung firmly in Riga’s favor, and just five minutes later, Iago Siqueira doubled the lead with a spectacular strike that left the opposing goalkeeper with no chance. This early double blow deflated Jelgava’s chances and set the tone for the rest of the match.
The second half started much like the first ended, with Riga continuing to press. The visitors’ defense was breached again when center-back Antonijs Černomordijs rose highest to meet a perfectly delivered cross from Joao Grimaldo, nodding the ball into the net. This marked Černomordijs’s third goal in as many games, making the 2025 season his most prolific campaign in terms of scoring in the Latvian top flight, with four goals to his name.
In the closing stages of the match, Riga appeared to notch a fourth goal, but VAR intervened, ruling out the effort for offside.
Jelgava, though struggling to break through, had a golden opportunity to pull one back late on. Ruslan Deružinskis, making his debut for the team, unleashed a close-range shot that was superbly saved by Riga’s keeper, Krišjānis Zviedris. Moments later, another chance fell to Kristers Aļekseičiks, who just failed to connect with a cross that could have turned the tide.
The victory underlined Riga FC’s growing legacy under coach Adrián Gula, as the club set a new Virslīga record with 15 consecutive wins — surpassing the previous club best of 14 consecutive victories established in 2020. With this win, Riga FC holds 54 points, solidifying a comfortable five-point cushion at the top of the table over their nearest rivals, RFS.
